In today’s technologically driven world, every product is marked with a barcode that stores essential data. If you are an MSME and wish to apply for a unique bar code for your products, this government scheme will help you implement the same with reimbursed costs.

Why is a Barcode important?

Barcodes contain information regarding the item code or serial number of a product, its expiry date, the details of the consignor and consignee, etc. By providing all the relevant information, a Barcode differentiates the product from other products. When the Barcode is scanned all the relevant product details are immediately captured by the computer with 100% accuracy.


Under the Marketing Support and Financial Assistance Scheme, the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute provides an MSME a 75% reimbursement of the one-time registration fee and annual recurring fee (for the first three years) incurred when you implement the technology of Barcodes in your business. This scheme enables eligible MSMEs to use barcodes in their products and enhance their marketing competitiveness.

Eligibility Criteria

What is the eligibility criteria for this scheme?

To be eligible for this scheme, your MSME business should have an Entrepreneurial Memorandum Part – II acknowledgement number from the Directorate of Industries/District Industries Centres. Along with this your business should also be registered with GS1 India for using barcodes.


How can an MSME apply for this scheme?

  • If an MSME meets the eligibility criteria, they can apply to the Director of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute of their region in the prescribed application form for claiming reimbursement. To download the forms click, here or here
  • If an MSME wants to register their enterprise for using Bar Codes they should approach the Global Standard 1 (GS1) India, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, which is authorised to grant and register MSMEs to use Bar Codes.
